ASU and Arizona face off in the Territorial Cup

This year’s edition of the Territorial Cup between ASU and Arizona Football has a little more momentum thanks to some massive postseason efforts.

The Sun Devils can all but clinch a spot in the Big 12 Championship with a win, but a Colorado victory over Oklahoma State on Friday meant the only scenario out of 256 permutations that would keep ASU out even with a win was still in the The game was Saturday.

For fans who want to follow the scenario, two games begin on Saturday at 10 a.m. MST. Sun Devil fans should hope Kansas wins at Baylor or West Virginia wins at Texas Tech. If both happen, a win in the Territorial Cup puts ASU in the game.

Two other games starting after the Territorial Cup could also impact the scenario: ASU fans want No. 24 Kansas State to win against No. 18 Iowa State (5:30 p.m.) or Houston against No. 19 BYU wins (8:15 a.m.).

It’s worth repeating: ASU only needs a win of its own and one of the other four games to punch its ticket to Arlington.

Arizona is already out of bowl contention after the Wildcats suffered their seventh loss of the season last week against TCU. As a result, best friends Noah Fifita and Tetairoa McMillan will likely be playing together for the last time, with McMillan almost certainly headed to the NFL.

They were outstanding in a 59-23 win in last year’s Territorial Cup, as McMillan caught 11 balls for 266 yards and a touchdown, while Fifita threw for 527 yards and five touchdowns.

The Wildcats have a chance to end ASU’s College Football Playoff hopes on Saturday, although Arizona coach Brent Brennan said Monday that the rivalry should be the focus, not the stakes of the game.

As for injuries, Jonah Savaiinaea is questionable (leg). The offensive tackle is one of the few Wildcats, along with McMillan and cornerback Tacario Davis, who have a chance to become early NFL draft picks.

Brennan said Wednesday he was “hopeful” Savaiinaea would be ready to go.
