Matt Campbell with a simple one-word answer to the question about the Big 12 tiebreakers

Iowa State head coach Matt Campbell doesn’t look at anything outside of the inner workings of his program.

That includes the tiebreaker scenarios surrounding his Cyclones and many of the other Big 12 teams as the final week of the regular season approaches.

Campbell addressed the many tiebreaker scenarios as well as overcoming adversity and preparing for Kansas State quarterback Avery Johnson in his weekly press conference.

“I think a fire is a misfortune,” Campbell said. “Any time you go through adversity, and we say this all the time in our program, either adversity is coming, you’re in the middle of it or you’re just coming out of it. It’s one of those three things. That’s life in general.

“The only way to overcome adversity is to withstand it and sprint through it. What’s so remarkable about our leadership is that when you work as hard as we do, no one likes to lose. Nobody has sharp fingers. Nobody complained. We just got back to work.

“Our seniors have shown the way. They have given this group a chance to recover and play their best football again in November. Her leadership has been truly rewarding to watch.”

“If you look at all these guys, there are some really good players in this group,” Campbell said. “To be a leader, I still believe in college football, you have to be a pretty good player. This group has some good football players.

“It comes down to what defines these football players? In my opinion, if you want to have a great team, you almost have to have a leader for the ages. You have to have qualities to be brave in the moment and brave against the standards. We are truly blessed to have great leadership as they have advanced these values every step of the way since January.”

“He’s such a talented runner and a really talented football player in general,” Campbell said. “I think a little bit of it is you have to use your wisdom (to stop him). We played some really talented quarterbacks who can run.

“His speed, his athleticism, his talent; they are hard. We have to use the 12 and 13 opportunities we’ve had so far to get some sort of bearings at the start of the game.”

“No,” said Campbell.
