FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. (AP) — Luis Suarez will play alongside Lionel Messi for at least another year.

Suárez and Inter Miami have agreed to a one-year contract extension for next season, the team announced on Wednesday.

Financial terms were not disclosed. Suarez earned $1.5 million this year in his first season with Inter Miami, which saw the Uruguayan striker score 20 goals in the Major League Soccer regular season – tied with Messi for the team lead – and in all competitions best team quota of 25 goals.

“I am very happy, very excited to continue for another year and to be able to enjoy being here with this fan base that is like a family to us,” Suarez said in comments distributed by the team. “We feel very, very connected to them and hope that we can bring them even more joy next year.”

Inter Miami set MLS records for points (74) and winning percentage (.765) in this MLS regular season, in which the club went 22-4-8 and captured the Supporters Shield. The club failed to advance past the first round of the playoffs, falling to Atlanta United in the best-of-three series.

The contract extension for Suarez, who turns 38 in January, keeps together Inter Miami’s core of stars with links to Barcelona. Suarez plays alongside Messi, Sergio Busquets and Jordi Alba at Inter Miami, a group that has linked up with the powerful Spanish club in recent years. And newly appointed Inter Miami coach Javier Mascherano – his hiring was officially announced on Tuesday – also played with that foursome at Barcelona.

“In 2024, Luis brought to Inter Miami all the elements that make him one of the greatest strikers of all time,” said Inter Miami President of Football Operations Raul Sanllehi. “He has delivered top performances for us and we are pleased that this will continue next season. Luis was not only our top scorer this season but also a leader of the group. His influence cannot be underestimated.”

Suarez has represented Uruguay in the last four World Cup competitions. He has played for Liverpool and Atletico Madrid, among others, and has won a number of awards – including Dutch Player of the Year, FIFA Club World Cup Golden Ball, Premier League Player of the Season and World Cup All-Star Team.
