Tim Allen’s new comedy series SHIFTING GEARS just received its first trailer.

“In the trailer, Matt’s (Tim Allen) old-fashioned, carefree values collide with Riley’s (Kat Dennings) modern parenting style,” Screen Rant reported on November 20. “Dennings, known for her comedic roles in 2 BROKE GIRLS and DOLLFACE, shines alongside Allen as the two deliver a mix of heartfelt moments and laugh-out-loud comedy in the working-class suburbs of Detroit.”

“The release of the official SHIFTING GEARS trailer means ABC is gearing up for the family sitcom’s premiere next month. “A comedy that balances generational conflict with family reconciliation, “Shifting Gears” appears to be a promising new addition to ABC’s family series lineup,” said Screen Rant.

Matt, who hasn’t seen his daughter in 15 years, struggles with sudden parenting (and grandparenting) responsibilities, while Riley navigates the new dynamic with him and their two young children… Riley and Matt’s relationship is rocky, to say the least .

“The trailer features plenty of comedic moments, from Matt playing video games with his new grandchildren to Riley’s hilarious comebacks and attempts to bond with the family. “SHIFTING GEARS’ premise signals a thematic return to Allen’s family television roots, such as LAST MAN STANDING and HOME IMPROVEMENT,” said Screen Rant. “With Allen and Dennings at the helm, supported by a strong ensemble cast and new guest stars, SHIFTING GEARS aims to deliver a relatable story for multi-generational families.”

The series stars actors Seann William Scott, Daryl “Chill” Mitchell, Barrett Margolis and Brenda Song. Allen and Dennings also both serve as producers.

The show premieres January 8th at 8pm ET on ABC. Hulu subscribers can stream it on January 9th.

Allen ended his previous sitcom, LAST MAN STANDING, three years ago. He won a Movieguide® Teddy Bear Award® for his performance in the series’ episode “Take Me to Church.”

“The word that keeps me alive is ‘grateful.’ I love what I do,” he told Us Weekly before the finale of LAST MAN STANDING. “I enjoy entertaining people much more than anything that has to do with money.”
