• Today’s lineup against the Lionesses features seven players – Naeher, Girma, Fox, Coffey, Lavelle, Horan and Thompson – who played in the USA’s last game at Wembley on October 7, 2022. Naeher, Girma, Fox, Lavelle and Horan all started that game, while Coffey and Thompson came on as second-half substitutes. It was only Coffey’s second cap for the USWNT and Thompson’s first.
• Only three players from this eleven – Naher, Horan and Lavelle – played against England in the 2019 World Cup semi-final in Lyon.
• Lindsey Horan will captain the USWNT for the 35th time in her career and earn her 160th cap, tying her for 21st all-time in USWNT history with the recently retired Kelley O’Hara. Horan, one of two US starters alongside Naomi Girma nominated for the “Best FIFA Player of the Year 2024” award, will start as team leader for the 20th time this year. Horan leads the USWNT with 1,652 minutes played in 2024 and is just 56 minutes away from setting a new career high for minutes played in a calendar year (1,707 minutes played as a player in 2021).
• Five days after announcing that she would retire from international football at the end of this trip, Alyssa Naher will be in goal for the USA as she makes her 17th start in 2024 and her 114th cap for the USWNT. Naeher, who famously saved a penalty from former England captain Steph Houghton in the 2019 World Cup semi-final, has kept 68 clean sheets in his career, including nine this year. Naeher’s nine shutouts are tied for the most in a calendar year with the USWNT and one. She becomes only the fourth goalkeeper in USWNT history to record double-digit shutouts in a year.
• Naomi Girma will start for the 17th time this year and play her 43rd international match for the USWNT. Girma started and played 82 minutes against the Lionesses in the two teams’ meeting in 2022, which was just her eighth international match. Two years later, she has established herself as one of the best center backs in the world and turned in a standout performance at the Paris Olympics, where she played all 600 minutes while leading a U.S. defense that conceded just two goals in six games. She ranks third on the team among outfield players this year and recorded a career-high 1,457 minutes of action.
• Lynn Williams will make her fourth start of the year and her 74th cap for the USWNT. Williams, who started the United States’ game against Iceland in Austin, Texas, on Oct. 24 and then scored a goal and an assist off the bench in Nashville three days later, has three goals in 14 appearances for the United States in 2024 and scored an assist, including a goal against Germany in the group stage of the Summer Olympics.
• Seven hundred and eighty-five days after her debut at Wembley at the age of 17 Alyssa Thompson will earn her 12th cap as she makes her fourth career start for the USWNT and her second of the year. Thompson, who scored her first international goal last month while starting against Iceland in Austin, Texas on October 24, had a memorable debut against England two years ago. Thompson came on for Megan Rapinoe in the 84th minute in front of a packed crowd of 76,893 fans and, at 17 years and 334 days, she became the 70th teenager ever to earn a cap for the USWNT and the youngest to debut since January 2016.
• The least experienced player in this starting eleven, Emma Sears will make her second career start as she earns only her third cap for the USWNT. The 23-year-old Sears was called up to the USWNT for the first time this October and made her first international appearance on October 27 in Nashville, Tennessee, where she came off the bench in the second half and recorded both a goal and an assist. Sears became the fourth player in USWNT history to score a goal and provide an assist in her USWNT debut. She then turned in a 90-minute performance – and her first career start – in the United States’ victory over Argentina on October 30 in Louisville, Kentucky.
• Emily Sonnet will make her eighth start and 19th appearance of the year for the USWNT and earn her 102nd cap. This will be Sonnett’s third career start against England, both in 2016 and 2018, and her 19 international appearances in 2024 are her most in a calendar year for the USWNT. A 2019 World Cup winner and 2024 Olympic gold medalist, Sonnett reached the 100 cap milestone in the USA’s Oct. 24 victory over Iceland, becoming the 45th player in USWNT history to reach 100 caps.
• Rose Lavelle, who made her international debut against England on March 4, 2017, will be making her 109th cap and 13th start this year. Lavelle captained the United States in its final game in Louisville and was honored for her 100th cap, which she played on June 4, 2024 against Korea Republic in St. Paul, Minnesota. Lavelle started and won the 2020 FA Cup Final at Wembley Stadium on 1 November 2020 while playing for Manchester City.
• Recently announced as midfield nominees for The Best FIFA Women’s 11, Sam Coffey will make her 18th start and 20th appearance of the year for the USWNT, while making her 27th international appearance overall. Coffey, who came on just after the hour mark against the Lionesses and earned her second cap in October 2022, is having a career year for the USWNT, recording career highs in starts (17), games played (19) and total minutes played (1,409). . ) and played a key role as a midfielder in the USA’s gold medal victory in Paris 2024.

• The only U.S. player to appear in every game this year, Emily Fox will make her 17th start of the year as she makes her 61st international appearance. Fox, who was recently announced as a 2024 The Best FIFA Women’s 11 defender, is the only American starter currently playing her club soccer in England, having signed with Arsenal FC in January 2024. Fox started all six games of the 2024 Olympics and is ranked second in the USWNT among field players this year with a total of 1,503 minutes of action, surpassing the 1,000 minute mark for the second consecutive year .
